Pressotherapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment for your body. You lie back in your own clothes while soft air chambers fill and release in a slow, rhythmic wave from your feet upwards. It is designed to support circulation and lymphatic movement, and it gives you thirty quiet minutes to switch off. Many people say they leave feeling lighter, calmer and more like themselves.

Sound familiar?

Tired, heavy, and never quite switched off?

It's one of the most common things women tell us. Busy days, broken sleep, and a body that feels heavier than it should.

  • Your legs feel heavy and achy by the end of the day
  • You feel puffy, bloated-feeling or "full of fluid", especially around menopause
  • You go to bed tired, but your mind and body won't switch off
  • You can't remember the last time you had half an hour just for you
  • Long journeys, desk days or hard training leave your body stiff and sluggish

Pressotherapy won't change your life overnight, and we won't pretend it does. What it can offer is thirty quiet minutes of slow, rhythmic compression that many people find deeply relaxing, a chance to rest and recharge, and that lovely feeling of lightness afterwards. All in a doctor-led clinic that first checks it's right for you.

The treatment

What is lymphatic drainage and pressotherapy?

Lymphatic drainage describes treatments that support the movement of lymph, the fluid your lymphatic system carries away from the tissues. It can be done by hand, as a massage, or with a machine.

Pressotherapy is the machine-assisted version. You lie back on the treatment bed and a soft suit is fitted around your legs and, if appropriate, your tummy. Air chambers inside it inflate and release one after another, from the feet upwards, in a slow, steady rhythm.

What does it feel like?

Like a firm, rhythmic hug that travels up your legs. It shouldn't hurt. The pressure is set for you at the start and can be changed at any moment, so you stay in control. Most people relax, many close their eyes, and some fall asleep.

You stay in your own comfortable clothes. Leggings or loose trousers are ideal.

Thirty minutes lying still, with nothing to do. Many people close their eyes, and some fall asleep.

Rest and recharge

A calm pause in a busy week. Many clients book it as their time to unwind and recharge.

A feeling of puffiness

That sense of fluid retention in the ankles, legs and tummy, often worse at the end of the day.

After travel or exercise

Stiff, tired, swollen-feeling legs after long journeys, flights or training.

Why choose a doctor-led clinic?

You're not just booking time on a machine

The same pressotherapy machines are found in salons and spas. The difference here is the thinking around them. Cosmetic Medicine is led by Dr Tania Robakowska, a GMC-registered doctor who qualified in 2007 and has practised aesthetic medicine since 2016.

Before anything is switched on, the question is not only "would you like a treatment?" but why your legs feel the way they do, whether pressotherapy is appropriate, and whether anything needs medical attention instead. Sometimes the honest answer is no.

Question 1 of 4

Your safety

Who is lymphatic drainage suitable for?

Pressotherapy suits many adults who want their legs to feel lighter and more comfortable. But it isn't right for everyone, which is why we check before treating.

Please speak to us before booking if you have, or might have:

  • a current or suspected blood clot (DVT), or a history of clots
  • heart failure or a significant heart condition
  • high blood pressure that isn't controlled
  • kidney disease
  • pregnancy
  • an infection or fever, cellulitis, open wounds or broken skin on the legs or tummy
  • recent surgery or injury to the legs or abdomen
  • cancer, or current cancer treatment
  • phlebitis, or significant blood vessel (vascular) disease

You don't need to work this out yourself. We go through it with you at the start of your first appointment. If treatment isn't appropriate, we'll explain why and what to do instead. If we don't treat you, there is nothing to pay.

Questions

Lymphatic drainage questions

What is lymphatic drainage?
Lymphatic drainage is a treatment designed to support the natural movement of lymph, the fluid your lymphatic system carries away from the tissues. It can be done by hand, as a gentle massage, or with a machine, which is called pressotherapy.
What is pressotherapy?
Pressotherapy uses a soft suit with air chambers, fitted around your legs and, if appropriate, your tummy. The chambers inflate and release in sequence, from your feet upwards, giving rhythmic compression that is designed to support circulation and lymphatic movement.
What does pressotherapy feel like?
Most people describe a firm, rhythmic squeeze that moves slowly up the legs, a little like a long hug. It's usually very relaxing. The pressure is set for you and can be changed at any time.
Is lymphatic drainage painful?
It shouldn't be. Pressotherapy should feel firm but comfortable. If anything feels too strong, tell us and we'll lower the pressure straight away.
Can pressotherapy help heavy or tired legs?
Many people tell us their legs feel lighter and less heavy afterwards, which is the most common reason they come back. Experiences vary, and we can't promise a specific result. If heavy legs are new, one-sided or painful, please see a doctor first.
Can lymphatic drainage help with puffiness?
It may help with the feeling of puffiness or fluid retention that many people notice in their ankles and legs. Swelling has many causes, though, and some need medical assessment rather than treatment. That's part of what we check at your first appointment.
Can pressotherapy help me relax or sleep better?
Many people find the slow, steady rhythm deeply relaxing, and some fall asleep during their session. We can't promise it will change how you sleep, but thirty quiet minutes to switch off and recharge is one of the main reasons clients come back.
Can it help after travelling?
Many people book a session after a long flight or drive, when their legs feel stiff and swollen. If you notice pain, warmth or swelling in one leg after travelling, seek medical advice the same day rather than booking a treatment.
How long does a session take?
A standard session is 30 minutes. Your first appointment includes a short suitability check before the treatment. Longer 45-minute sessions are also available.
How many sessions might I need?
Some people enjoy a single session now and then; others prefer a course of four or eight, often once or twice a week. After your first session we'll talk honestly about what, if anything, makes sense for you.
How often can I have pressotherapy?
For most people, once or twice a week during a course is comfortable, with occasional sessions afterwards. We'll suggest a rhythm that suits you and your health.
Who should not have lymphatic drainage?
Please speak to us before booking if you have, or might have: a blood clot (DVT) or a history of clots, heart failure or a significant heart condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, kidney disease, pregnancy, an infection, fever, cellulitis or broken skin on the treated area, recent surgery or injury to the legs or abdomen, cancer or current cancer treatment, phlebitis, or significant blood vessel (vascular) disease. We check your suitability again at your first appointment.
How much does lymphatic drainage cost at Cosmetic Medicine?
Your consultation is free. If pressotherapy is right for you, your first 30-minute session follows in the same visit for £25, paid at the clinic. A standard 30-minute session is £60 and a 45-minute session is £80. Course offers are available, and we'll explain them at your first appointment. See pressotherapy prices.
